Canopy Tours Wins Environmental and Supreme Tourism Award
30 September, 2016
In late September, the team at Rotorua Canopy Tours were blown away by their success at the New Zealand Tourism Awards.
Not only did they win the Environmental Tourism Award for their efforts to eradicate pests and restore native birdlife to the Dansey Road Scenic Reserve, they also picked up the Visitor Experience Award and the ultimate prize – the Air New Zealand Supreme Tourism Award for 2016.
This is a fantastic achievement and a great acknowledgment of everyone’s efforts to establish this relatively new business where conservation, excitement and fun go hand-in-hand.
In four short years Rotorua Canopy Tours has become this country’s leading eco-tourism operator. Visitors get to experience the amazing native forest canopy from a bird’s eye view – flying along high-wire ziplines through the trees and walking across swing bridges to reach a series of tree-top platforms.
Each tour is led by experienced guides who educate and inform people about important conservation messages along the way. The company’s predator trapping programme has now created a ‘safe zone’ spanning 180ha where 700 traps help protect native birds, allowing them the chance to thrive. The whole team is involved in the trapping project and they’re passionate about trying to completely eradicate possums, stoats and rats from this part of the forest.
Their enthusiasm has certainly rubbed off on their guests and Rotorua Canopy Tours is now ranked the #1 outdoor activity in New Zealand on Trip Adviser. People have described the tour as the “best adventure ever” and “absolute highlight of our weekend away”.
The judges of this year’s Tourism Awards mentioned the “outstanding environmental outcomes” that had been achieved as a result of “passion, innovation and perseverance”. They also noted the “phenomenal nature experience” had seen a rapid growth in visitor numbers in just a few short years.
Rotorua Canopy Tours founder James Fitzgerald wants to ensure visitors have the best possible experience. Each tour group is limited to just 10 people and they’re accompanied by an experienced and enthusiastic local guide.
Hanging out in the forest canopy is probably the best office view anyone could ask for, and staff absolutely love helping people conquer any fears and fully enjoy their time in the trees. The company’s culture and regular staff functions mean their employees have just as much fun as their guests, and these latest tourism accolades are sure to keep everyone smiling for a long time yet!
